AI In Modern Art

Art / Music / Writing

Intro

AI has been developping at a consistently fast rate. In the last 2 years, AI has skyrocketed espicially with the release of ChatGPT, an AI Software which runs on OpenAI releasing in late 2022 and other AI software such as Claude, a trusted AI Assitant and dozens of company specific AI such as Google Gemini, Bing AI and even the upcoming Apple Intelligence coming in September 2024. Many proclaim that AI will revolutionize our future, and could have a widely positive impact on our society. However, AI also has many risks and dangers that could come with it.

In Writing

It seems to me that it is very often difficult for the reader to distinguish between AI and a human-authored text, rather the two are manifestation of the same spirit, two siblings that were born one to the other. If you came across a write-up which has been written by AI, you'll find that it will nearly resemble a human's writing in terms of language used, grammar employed and the writing style. This similarity is because based on large corpus of human written text, it has learned most of the stylistic and grammatical features. Indeed, there are occasions when one cannot distinguish between a sentence that was written by a machine and a human. For instance, AI can write interesting stories, or produce effective essays, as well as humans do. Adapted from the style of human writing the AI can convey emotion, jokes, and even sarcasm. However, even though with the help of AI content can be produced rather fast and effective, each written work has its flavor rooted in personal experience, true creativity, and individual voice. That is why human writing is unique and/or arguably more realistic at times. Still, the key point is that it is now possible, given information of good quality, for a computer to come very close to mimicking the actual human cursing ... It's like a very intelligent living companion who can put together homework for you or sit with you to write a story. Thus, the analysis of the current state of AI writing proves that technology is already very developed, and it is becoming more and more similar to human creativity.
After reading this, I want you to ask yourself... Was this made with AI? Maybe check an AI detection software. The answer is Yes. Your AI detection software probably insisted otherwise didn't it? AI in writing can really be impactful, and these 3 points will help you understand the risk.

Essays

AI has a huge impact towards essay writing in the modern days. With the fast revolution of AI software such as ChatGPT, AI has been affecting essay writing across the world. All you need is a a quick message or a prompt based on your essay topic and voila! You have created an essay, with little to no human intervention. Even with the addition of AI detecting software, there is an easy workaround. Using Humanizers like StealWrither AI or WriteSonic AI, grant you access to easily bypass these AI detectors and make your texts seem 100% human written.

Creativity

The creative mindset also follows a similar fate as Essays with the advance of AI. Creativity has always been and will be a crucial part of our lives. Although, the advance of AI brutally contradicts our creative mindset. This is so since AI can easily replace the necessary human input and thought process that used to spark creativity. Espicially with ongoing updaes that allow AI to discover new information based on patterns and connections of old information. However, it is important for us to understand the all these aspects aren't certain and may be disproved of.
Authors
Generally, AI's possible impact against writers is predominately unheard of. Many insist that writing novels or books requires a human charm or can only be properly made with human intervention. Although, as many companies keep improving their AI and modeling them to replicate the human mindset. Since books require large amounts of creativity, this can be a huge roadblock for authors. However, for AI, using their technology to connect informations, they can easily overcome these roadblocks and create creative stories with minimal effort and time.

In Music

In the recent years, AI has started to wager a huge influence in the music industry, In fact the capability of AI to mimic voices of artists has become so advance that these "AI musicians" are starting to rise up into mainstream media. Here are two major examples of artists how have been able to make a stand for themselves using only AI technology for their music careers.

In recent Rap, AI Artists have been blossoming due to the lack of real music from rappers. This surge causes TWXN, an AI artist who's uses famous rappers voices such as Playboy Carti and Travis Scott in his songs. Using AI Technology to produce these rappers voices, Twxn has been able to build himsef a soid community of over 3 million monthly listeners. As of July 2024, his most popular song, Telescope has a slowly incereasing 34 million streams. Twxn is well known on Tiktok with tens of thousands of followers. His capability to replicate real artists is so astonishing that thousand of people believed his music was authentically sung by Playboi Carti and Travis Scott.
Unlike TWXN, Glorb's success isn't derived off of using voices of famous rappers. Instead, GLORB uses AI SpongeBob, SquidWard, Sandy, Patrick and as many other SpongeBob SquarePants characters you could think of. Also, according to interviews that Glorb has participated in. He is claimed to be a previously succesful artist in the music industry, who is already a profound writer, although all lyrics are sung through AI voices. As of July 2024, Glorb has about 885000 monthly listeners, with 3 songs reigning over 10 million streams. Glorb hasn't just made rap tracks, he has also experimented with songs that give off more of a country style or a sad style such as: Sadkini and Can Gangsters Cry. Description>

These two artists are only rappers, meaning there could be, and are likely dozens of other AI artists in the world who produce different genres of music from rock, pop and likely even jazz. In fact, AI doesn't just produce vocals, It can also affect production through making beats, melodies and even ryhtyms. Thankfully, AI in the music industry isn't too polished. This makes spotting the difference from real music and AI generated not too difficult. However, only time can tell.

In Art

With AI Music and AI Writing being much more noticeable, many take AI Art under the radar. However, AI Art is known to be very controversial due to the scheming attitudes of "AI Artists" - People who solely use AI to create their Art. AI art is known to be very disruptive towards the art community since spotting the difference between true work and AI generated work is quite challenging, many even say it's impossible. Many true artists, who don't use AI to produce their work have been against AI artists. In fact, the controversy between AI artists and regular artists has scaled to such a point that artists are telling viewers to not support the art created by these AI artists because they disprove of it. This act has causes many AI artists to go under the radar by not confirming if their art is AI generated. They refuse to tag their art as such, making the difficulty of spotting the difference an all time high.

Two well-known AI Artists

Sougwen Chung
Sougwen Chung is a Canadian-Born, Chinese Artist raised in London, England. She is most notably known for winning being an award-winning artist who embraces the communication between people and machines through hand and technologically-reproduced marks. Having being a former researcher at MIT Media Lab and current Artist in Resident at Bell Labs and New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York, Sougwen Chung is a very talanted woman, who understands the deeper meaning to AI technology, and how we, being artists and AI can benefit and grow together through art. She has hosted dozens of exhibitions, speeches, press conferences and has earned 8 awards/residences in the last 14 years. (Such as the Excellence Award (Entertainment Division) at the Japan Media Arts Festival) and she has participated in Google Artist In Residence (SF) with Google Artits and Machine Inteligence (AMI). Primarily, Sougwen Chung is known for many intriguing artworks. (See below).
Refik Anadol
Refik Anadol is a media artist and director from Instabul who has inspired audiences worldwide through his scale and interactive AI projects. His biggest project WDCH Dreams (see below!) was created in partnership with Artists and Machine Intelligence (AMI) a program at Google which's main focus is to embrace the collaboration between artists with engineers and reseachers on the development of intelligence systems capable of creating art. Refik Anadol primarily works with a wide source of data. This data that he gains is turned into art through machine learning algorithims and AI algorithims, which help him as an artist thrive. These algorithims can learn, dream and make creative pieces of art. Refik Anadol states that "You can let the building learn, let the building dream, let the building become kind of human. Those are part of my imagination with the built environment." This proves how AI and humans can work together and advance as one in the evolution of modern art.

Conclusion

AI is something many don't fully comprehend. AI has many dangers that could risk jobs, opportunites and communities. Although, it's important to always look at things in a different perspective. AI may seem very dangerous and a huge potential risk to our future. However, AI could also greatly benefit our future if we learn how to use AI to our advantage, set boundaries with it, and use it in a respectful, planned out manner.
